Literacia do depositante e disciplina do risco bancário: contributos de um inquérito on-line

Abstract


Este estudo analisa o contributo da literacia financeira para a eficácia da disciplina de mercado promovida pelos depositantes particulares, no contexto do setor bancário nacional. 

Para o objetivo central do estudo – avaliar a aptidão dos depositantes para procurarem a informação apropriada, serem capazes de compreender e interpretar essa informação e darem sentido à atividade financeira promovendo a disciplina de mercado - foi realizado um estudo empírico, consubstanciado num inquérito por questionário, que recolheu dados do público-alvo constituído pelos depositantes particulares dos bancos. 

Os resultados obtidos sugerem que os depositantes portugueses têm limitada literacia financeira. De um modo geral, o inquérito salienta a falta de consciência entre a população sobre os riscos bancários e a regulação e fornece fraca evidência de que os depositantes estão cientes das perdas de depósitos em caso de falência bancária.  

O modesto nível de literacia financeira observado tem implicações na aptidão do mercado para moderar a tomada de riscos excessivos pelos bancos. O papel preconizado para os depositantes fica, assim, coartado na sua capacidade para monitorizar e influenciar racionalmente as instituições.
